6 Tips for Combatting Dry Curly Hair

The statement we most often hear from customers is “my hair is so dry, what do you have for that?” 

If you’re experiencing dry hair, you’re not alone. It’s a common problem among curly hair types. There’s no quick fix for resolving dry hair. It’s an issue that requires regular check-in, analysis and revision. There is no magic product. Although a great product may give you immediate results, it’s temporary. To maintain healthy and moisturized hair over the long-haul requires regular maintenance and developing a haircare routine that works. 

We’ve outlined a few key tips here for you to incorporate into your regular routine, so you can keep your hair moisturized and manageable. 

1. Hydrate Your Curls With Water

Let’s start with the basics and I’m sure you’ve heard this before. But what the proverbial “they” say is true. Drinking more water can help with the health and maintenance of your body and your hair. Water hydrates your cells and regulates your circulatory system. It feeds your hair follicles and helps to strengthen and grow your hair. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day. And if you’re not, add more.

2. Say Goodbye to Drying Shampoos

If you’re newly natural (or even if you’re not) and you’re using shampoos with sulfates in them, you may need to switch. Sulfates are harsh detergents found in many shampoos (especially drug store brands). They strip hair of its natural moisture causing the hair to be brittle, dry and damaged. And they may also cause irritation to the scalp.

Because curly hair is fragile by nature, adding harsh shampoos can make them even more susceptible to dryness and damage. As a curly girl, you may want to make the switch to sulfate-free shampoos or shampoo alternatives. These options are often better for curly, kinky, and coily hair types because they cleanse without stripping and leave hair feeling clean yet moisturized.

3. Don’t Skip Your Deep Conditioner

In our experience, hands down, this has got to be the most neglected step in a haircare routine. Of the people who approach us with problems related to dry hair, this is the one step they often are not doing either on a regular basis or at all.

Deep conditioning your hair works in a variety of ways. It helps to:

  • repair damage
  • strengthen hair strands
  • encourage growth 
  • reduce frizz 
  • improve softness and manageability
  • retain moisture

You will need to make adjustments to your deep conditioning routine depending on whether you have low, high, or medium porosity hair. Not sure which type of hair you have? 

4. Don’t Confuse Your Products

Styling products such as gels, custards, and jellies are not moisturizers. If you’re experiencing dryness apply a leave-in or a moisturizer before or with your styling product.

5. More Water

This time, spritz your hair with it. Whenever you need to restyle your hair, don’t forget to spritz with some water. That means, whether you’re sporting a wash n’ go, doing a mid-week retwist, or rocking your natural fro, spritzing can bring life back to tired, thirsty curls. Don’t forget to seal with a butter or oil to help keep the moisture in. 

6. Find a Routine and Revise When Necessary

Once you’ve figured out what works for your hair, stick to it. You may find that you need to deep condition every other week, or that you don’t need to spritz your hair every day. Whatever your combination is, keep doing it. If something isn’t working, switch it up. Try deep conditioning every week, and switching your shampoo to a sulfate-free one. Your hair will thrive on regular maintenance and on incorporating tools and techniques which help to keep it moisturized.
